Inspirational Story of SCG Foundation’s Sharing the Dream scholarship grantee: “Doing a Thankless Job,” Sacrificing for the Public Good

“I am inspired to do good by my cousin’s pledge to volunteer as a rescue worker, and I’m keen to support others. That’s why I am part of the Phrae’s rescue team to help disaster victims or needy people who can be patients, injured people, or I have to offer battery jump-start, tow the car, clear and take away dead bodies in the scenes, and others 24/7. As the COVID-19 pandemic hits Thailand, we have to wear masks, gloves and personal protective equipment, and others while rescuing patients or injured people. Despite discomfort, heat, difficulty breathing, we have to wear them to protect ourselves. I received words of support from people, friends, and colleagues, especially the smiles on the faces of families of patients or praises from the loss. Sometimes, I felt disheartened, tired, and upset, but it was all right. We have to continue our cause, be patient and vigorous to support people in time of needs; as the saying goes, “We do good without ostentation to forgive our sins. It’s doing good with attention, not for attention. It doesn’t matter if you are not seen; it’s the ‘faith’ that endures.”

“I don’t care what people will say; I love to sacrifice for the good of all.”

Inspirational Story of SCG Foundation’s Sharing the Dream scholarship grantee: “I’m Listening, I’m Working”

“These days, like all my friends, I have to study online at home. But it’s different for me because I’m from a low-income family. I have to work and also study. It’s tiresome, but I can do it”

Every morning, I do a check-in for class. And later, I work at a garage I worked for during my internship to do repair works. ‘My ears are listening; my hands are working.’ If I have to join a video call, I will do it while doing my jobs. The teachers understand that I need to earn money for the family.

Of course I’m afraid of getting COVID, but I have to work to support my family. I decided to study online and work at the same time. Anyway, I wear a mask all the time. I always use alcohol spray and wash my hands. I never give up on protecting myself.”

#People may deal with hard times and are in distress now. I want everyone to be patient and don’t give up.We will get through this crisis together.

SCG Foundation Presents Short Film “Hope Letter” to Thai People to Boost Everyone’s Self-Worth and Superpower

SCG Foundation aims to encourage a sense of self-worth via a short film titled “Hope Letter,” portraying real-life stories of 4 individuals to reflect their thoughts and ability to adapt to or cope with the situation while facing the COVID-19 crisis. The short film aims to evoke inspirations and awaken the power within the individuals and hope for all Thais to overcome the COVID-19 crisis together.

Ms. Suvimol Chivaluk, Director and Manager of SCG Foundation, saidthat in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, SCG Foundation has offered emergency relief since January 2020 to a broad range of people from medical professionals, young people, the poor to the underprivileged people in the form of medical innovations, necessary hygiene supplies, and materials for consumption. However, a large number of people are still significantly impacted by the COVID-19 and are facing a variety of adversities from job losses, pay cuts, business closings, or losing everything one has built. These hardships have dragged down people’s self-worth, hope, and optimism, some of which took their lives to end this suffering.

“As a charitable organization that focuses on empowering “people” and commitment to belief in the value of the “individual,” SCG Foundation emphasizes “adaptability” which it believes a superpower resides within everyone in a short film “Hope Letter,” portraying the real-life stories of four individuals: a beauty blogger, a bar owner, a washing machine repairman, and a restaurant chef. The film tells the story of ordinary people who have extraordinary ways of thinking. Each one manages to adapt to and deal with COVID-19 in their different ways and overcome their difficulties. The Foundation hopes that these real-life stories will be an inspiration and boost confidence and self-worth in people, like what the film says, “If you are still breathing, you will get through it all..”

You can watch the short film “Hope Letter” by SCG Foundation starting from today on “scgfoundation” YouTube channel and SCG Foundation Facebook Page.

SCG Foundation, CPAC Join Hands with OVEC to Launch “Advancing Vocational Skills Toward Professional Excellence” Program to Fulfil Market Demand for Skilled and Qualified Professionals

SCG Foundation, a charitable organization that continuously support and foster education, together with The Concrete Products and Aggregate Co., Ltd. (CPAC), and the Office of Vocational Education Commission (OVEC), have signed a Memorandum of Agreement launching the program “Advancing Vocational Skills Toward Professional Excellence.” The goal is to strengthen and provide students of civil engineering and construction programs with know-how, enhanced skills, and real-world experience to meet today’s market demands and international standards.

Ms. Suvimol Chivaluk, Director and Manager of SCG Foundation, said that the partnership signifies the importance of vocational college graduates in national development both in industrial and service sectors. SCG Foundation, the government, private sector, and civil society, have proactively implemented the public-private partnership to enhance the “Competitive Workforce” to develop vocational excellence and improve vocational students’ quality. SCG Foundation has strived to promote vocational education to boost the potential of the country’s vocational professionals. Although the country has experienced an economic slowdown and a declining demand for labor in several industries, including the large-scale construction industry, there is an upside demand for workers with professional skills and expertise in repair work as well as small and medium-scale construction projects. With a strong and sustained commitment to supporting education and producing skilled professionals to meet the country’s market demand, SCG Foundation has supported modern construction equipment worth 1.5 million Baht to 11 technical colleges that joined the pilot program. The provided equipment and tools include polishing machines, ground compactors, bolt cutters, installing the laser system, bull floats, cube molds, cement carts, wheelbarrows, lipped channel steel molds, concrete vibrators, concrete finishing machines, safety equipment, and other relevant tools.

Mr. Panya Sophasriphan, Director of Business Relations and Sustainable Development, Cement – Building Materials Business of The Concrete Products and Aggregate Co., Ltd. or CPAC, added, “The program came up after CPAC provided a class lecture on concrete technology to students of civil engineering and construction programs at Nakhon Si Thammarat Technical College that CPAC is committed to doing every year. We learned that some students wish to earn income while studying and gain real-world experience. And this is the right timing as some CPAC customers buy our concrete and still find that employing good technicians can be frustrating. These customers asked CPAC to recommend ones. This unfulfilled need has brought about the workshop and experience sharing program to develop vocational students’ skills and offer them with real-world experience at the customer’s site on top of a proper way to work with concrete by CPAC engineers and local technicians. CPAC customers are responsible for the material and labor costs of the students, while SCG Foundation supported tools and equipment. Plus, students will also gain knowledge of job costing, marketing, customer acquisition, on-site survey, cost estimation, and accounting, which will enable them to acquire contracts through the college’s construction profession association by themselves. The project’s implementation received positive feedback as the association can obtain 2-3 jobs per month on Saturday and Sunday and during semester breaks. Students not only gain real-world experience but also earn an extra income of an average of 350 Baht per day per person. To date, over 300 students have participated in the training program that integrates education in both theory and practice. And about 90 students have acquired jobs directly or through the college’s association. This outcome has brought student’s pride on top of meeting the project goals.

Mr. Narong Paewponsong, Secretary-General of the Office of Vocational Education Commission, revealedthat the program “Advancing Vocational Skills Toward Professional Excellence” will last for one year. The agreement’s purpose is to establish a public-private partnership to enhance vocational education management by supporting and fostering the development of professional skills for students in OVEC affiliated colleges that offer construction and civil engineering programs. The partnership aims to equip knowledge, professional skills with real-world experience to produce skilled professionals to meet the needs of today’s market demand and on a par with international standards. CPAC will provide training and know-how on concrete technology both in theory and practice in real construction work on top of relevant knowledge, such as project acquisition, costing, work safety, equipment maintenance for participants. The program will give assignments to help students gain on-site professional skills together with workshops and training programs on construction technology and construction solution for teachers, educators, and students in construction and civil engineering programs. SCG Foundation will support concrete construction materials for 11 technical colleges that participated in the program, namely, Chiang Mai Technical College, Lampang Technical College, Phitsanulok Technical College, Khonkaen Technical College, Search Results Web result with site links Nakhonratchasima Technical College, Ayutthaya Technical College, Saraburi Technical College, Dusit Technical College, Suratthani Technical College, Phuket Technical College, and Hatyai Technical College.

“In this respect, OVEC is the core unit for offering vocational education and professional training that strives to achieve professional excellence. This partnership will bring about construction technicians and civil engineers equipped with know-how, skills, and being on a par with international standards and also fulfill the demand for professional technicians,” concluded the Secretary-General.

SCG Foundation Partners with Foundation for Good Governance on Medicine to Donate 100,000 Face Masks and Launches “Thai Kids Fight COVID” Drawing & Painting Competition

download “Thai Kids Fight COVID”

SCG Foundation, a public charity organization focusing on empowering “people,” especially children and youth who are the driving force for national development in the future, joined hands with the Foundation for Good Governance on Medicine in the project “Thai Kids Fight COVID,”donating 100,000 cloth face masks worth 3,500,000 Baht to students in remote areas and students who have poor access to cloth masks. The effort aims to keep students safe from the COVID-19 pandemic. The partnership also launched a children’s drawing and painting competition, “Thai Kids Fight COVID,” for primary school students to encourage students to become conscious of self-care and protection at school amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Emeritus Dr. Kasem Wattanachai, Privy Councilor as Chairman of Foundation for Good Governance on Medicine, said “Thai Kids Fight COVID is a project initiated by the Foundation for Good Governance on Medicine and alumni of the Certificate Course in Good Governance for Medical Executives Class 1-8, aimed at providing support towards the underprivileged children, especially primary pupils who are among venerable groups at risk of COVID-19 infection. The effort kicked off the project by providing high-quality cloth masks to primary school students level 1-4 in remote areas. The group works in collaboration with a network of 21 Crown Prince Hospitals and 11 Community Hospital Commemorating His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary. Healthcare workers of the network help provide care and proper education on wearing a face mask, handwashing, and good hygiene practices to students and teachers.”

Mr. Roongrote Rangsiyopash, President of SCG Foundation, disclosed, “SCG Foundation is committed to promoting the capability and instilling a sense of social responsibility in children and youth. It has recognized the importance of wearing a cloth face mask in preventing the risk of infection among kids during semester break. The foundation has donated 100,000 pieces of face masks worth 3,500,000 Baht to children in remote areas via the Foundation for Good Governance on Medicine. The face masks are designed with high-quality and safe fabric materials made to provide a better fit for children. The face masks are colorful and appealing to children. Children can write their names on the mask to avoid loss or switching. Each child will be given two face masks.”

Furthermore, SCG Foundation and the Foundation for Good Governance on Medicine also organized a drawing and painting competition “Thai Kids Fight COVID” with the concept of self-care against COVID-19 at school. The competition aims at raising awareness among students on the importance of self-protection and good hygiene practices such as wearing a face mask, maintaining physical distancing, and handwashing. The competition is split into two categories: Primary 1-3 and Primary 4-6. The entry format is the paper size A3. Any drawing or painting styles, techniques, types are welcomed.

“For this drawing and painting competition, we received support from the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) to help publicize the competition in all primary schools under the supervision of OBEC, where students across the country can participate and submit their artwork to the contest. The competition is honored to have Clinical Professor Emeritus Udom Kachintor chair the judging panel, which includes several qualified jury members like Sangkom Thongmee,” said Roongrote.

Air Vice-Marshal Ittaporn Kanacharoen, Secretary-General of the Medical Council of Thailand, opined, “In many countries, one of the drivers for the second wave of COVID-19 infections is school reopening. And that’s why schools have to remain closed since making sure that children keep the mask on, practice physical distancing, and handwashing is difficult. However, kids refusing to wear face mask could be because of the unfamiliarity, or masks weren’t made to properly fit their faces. The drawing and painting competition is introduced to raise awareness among children, parents, and teachers of the importance of wearing face masks as this practice is needed to keep them protected from COVID-19. The competition’s approach is a gimmicky strategy to drive awareness through the power of children. I am confident that the cooperation from all sides and ages will reduce the chance of a second wave of COVID-19 in Thailand. I would like to thank SCG Foundation for being an organization that prioritizes children and youth and promotes the importance of wearing face masks. This collaboration will keep children – the future of the nation – safer, especially when they are together at school.”

The registration for the drawing and painting competition is open from 20 July until 31 August 2020. Twenty artworks in each category will be shortlisted by jury members on 5 September 2020 and made available to the public via SCG Foundation Facebook from 6-18 September. The artwork with the most likes will be awarded the People’s Choice prize. For the final round, the winning artworks will be decided by the jury members, and the winners will be announced on 19 September 2020. A cash prize of 20,000 Baht will be given to each grand prize winner. SCG Foundation and Siam Global House Support Healthcare Workers of Roi Et Hospital with COVID-19 Innovation

SCG Foundation teamed up with Siam Global House Public Company Limited, donating the Modular Screening & Swab Unit and Modular Bathroom worth 3.9 million Baht to keep the hospital at a heightened state of readiness for a possible new wave of COVID-19. The innovation aims to reduce contact between medical professionals and patients with an integrated pressure-controlled airflow system to ensure appropriate air quality and disinfection system to stop the spread of the virus. The units can conveniently be installed in a limited space in no time which helps mitigate the risk of COVID-19 infections among healthcare workers and patients. Roi Et Governor Wanchai Kongkasem presided over the handover ceremony along with    Dr. Chonlawit Laothong, Director of Roi Et Hospital, Dr. Pitakpong Payuha, Deputy Provincial Chief Medical Officer of Roi Et and Roi Et Communicable Disease Committee, Mr. Witoon Suriyawanakul, CEO of Siam Global House Pcl. and Mr. Bunn Kasemsup, Head of SCG Home Retail and Distribution Business on behalf of SCG Foundation.

Dr. Chonlawit Laothong, Director of Roi Et Hospital, revealed that the team at the hospital is delighted and gratified by the Modular Screening & Swab Unit provided by SCG Foundation and Siam Global House Pcl. The support signifies that the two companies underline the priority of enhancing the safety of healthcare workers operating on the front line of care by introducing a universal standard Modular Screening & Swab Unit to provide safe testing for suspected patients. The hospital has optimized the Modular Screening & Swab Unit to fit medical practices and services for respiratory patients and transformed it into a one-stop service to improve service speed offering al-inclusive services in one place from patient registration, medical history evaluation, an examination by a doctor, swab collection, to drug collection.   The service point is located in a separate area that is made isolated from the main building to avoid direct contact between patients to reduce the risk of infection. The unit will help increase the hospital’s readiness for the second wave of COVID-19 or can be used for testing other respiratory diseases like fever, or pulmonary tuberculosis when the COVID-19 pandemic is contained. The hospital offers care for over 9,700 respiratory cases a year. Roi Et Hospital provides tertiary care with a bed capacity of 820 and a daily patient load of 2,000 people. The Modular Screening & Swab Unit has been successfully installed and open to patients with respiratory conditions such as cough, sore throat, runny nose, or inability to smell. The unit is located in front of Roi Et Hospital’s Mahaweero Building on Rimkhlong road. The unit is used to provide tests to those with suspected infections and ensure that they are effectively isolated from other patients in the hospital building. The one-stop service has been operating since June 1, 2020.

Mr. Bunn Kasemsup, Head of SCG Home Retail and Distribution Business, on behalf of SCG Foundation, added that the Modular Screening & Swab Unit intertwines the SCG’s technologies of SCG HEIM and Living Solution. The testing room reserved for suspected COVID-19 cases is designed with Smart Indoor Air Quality (IAQ Smart), which maintains adequate air pressure and airflow to ensure clean and safe air. The airtightness system will keep the unit sealed and prevent air migration, resulting in effective pressure control in the room. Healthcare workers will be in a positive pressure room where the contaminated air will be barred to ensure a clean and safe environment. The suspected patients will be in a negatively pressurized room equipped with constant suction to prevent the virus from escaping, ensuring safety among medical teams. The swabbing process is performed through an acrylic sheet that allows doctors to insert their hands through a plastic glove-covered slot to collect the sample, lowering the risk of contracting the virus from patients. Plus, the UV germicide, concentrated UV radiation, is applied to kill the virus after each use. About 80 percent of the structure is made in SCG’s factories where the quality and the cleanliness of the units are under control throughout the manufacturing process. The structure is designed for quick and easy installation and reduces the risk of infections among healthcare workers and patients while offering quicker and more effective testing results.

Mr. Witoon Suriyawanakul, CEO of Siam Global House Pcl., said that since the early outbreak of COVID-19 to the preparedness for the second wave of infections, front line workers at the hospital have persistently provided screening and testing services for suspected cases prior to the treatment. On behalf of Siam Global House, the company is part of Roi Et province as it is home to company’s main office, and the company’s partners and employees are people from Roi Et and neighboring provinces. We realized that Roi Et Hospital is a large hospital tasked with managing care for people of Roi Et and nearby provinces in the northeast that is still in need of support on safety and facilitation for healthcare workers and patients.

SCG Foundation and Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group Band Together to Provide 100,000 Alcohol Sprays Worth 5 Million Baht to Keep Thais Guarded and Protected from COVID-19

Crisis always brings opportunity, and this time it shines a positive light where we see individuals, groups, and organizations with different expertise coming together to help the country get through this crisis. Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group, Thailand’s fully integrated sugar business, joined hands with SCG Foundation and SCG Express, producing and delivering 100,000 bottles of 60 ml alcohol-based sprays to Thai PBS. Thai PBS will give the handout to the Immigration Bureau and Ministry of Labour for further distribution to officials facing a higher risk of infection and cross-border workers across the country.

Dr. Ukrit Asdathorn, Managing Director of Thai Roong Ruang Energy Co. Ltd, a bagasse-based ethanol producer, a subsidiary of Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group, said that “The partnership was forged in March in the wake of alcohol shortage. We realize that hospitals, healthcare workers, and staff at state quarantine facilities are dedicated frontline workers. The company is temporarily licensed by the Excise Department to produce alcohol for sanitation purposes. We straightaway delivered alcohol to hospitals and relevant units working at state quarantine facilities. Until now, over 70,000 liters of alcohol are provided out of the estimated demand of 100,000 liters, of which we are delivering at the receivers’ convenience and requirements. We would like to thank the companies for the support of tanks and glycerol, which were hard to find at the time. With the support, we manage to deliver alcohol to over a hundred hospitals and relevant units.”

“Now, the shortage of alcohol has subsided; the next goal for all Thais is to prevent a new wave of COVID-19. We understand that some Thais do not have access to alcohol, so we partnered with SCG Foundation to make alcohol-based sprays to keep the hygiene practices intact and remain guarded while helping one another stop COVID-19 from returning,” said Dr. Ukrit.

Mr. Yuttana Jiamtragan, Director of SCG Foundation, said“The foundation has aided and protected healthcare workers from the risk of infection by equipping them with COVID-19 innovations at hospitals nationwide worth over 60 million Baht. The innovation series include Mobile Isolation Unit, Patient Isolation Capsule, Dent Guard, and 600 sets of item kits (Or Sor Mor or VHV Kits) in the express of concerns and gratitude toward the community heroes, Village Health Volunteers (VHVs)”

“The pandemic situation in Thailand has improved as the number of new cases has declined, but we have to stay vigilant and keep our guard up. SCG Foundation and Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group have collaborated to produce alcohol-based sprays and donated them to the Ministry of Labor and Immigration Bureau. The items will be further distributed to officials and individuals facing heightened risks of infections due to the nature of social contacts in daily operations. This is a dedicated group of people working since the outbreak of the disease. At the same time, the alcohol-based sprays will be given to officials at Immigration Division and Social Security Office across the country and vicinity areas, Department of Employment, Labour Checkpoint, and Employment Office nationwide. The efforts aim to reduce the risk of infection and accommodate safer border-crossing with SCG Express collaboration to deliver alcohol-based items free of charge. And importantly, we would like to thank Thai PBS for mediating the handout to improve the safety of Thai people,” said Mr. Yuttana.

Apart from this handout, Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group and SCG Foundation plan to distribute 100,000 alcohol-based sprays to aid the underprivileged people such as visually impaired people, School for the Blind, and people in a slum area who have poor access to alcohol sprays. The support aims to secure hygienic well-being and prevent the second wave of infections.

Although Thailand’s overall situation has improved, we need to remain vigilant because various parts of the world are facing a continued surge in infections. And it is the mutual responsibility of all Thais to take care of themselves and one another to avoid burdening medical resources. Thai Roong Ruang Sugar Group, SCG Foundation, and SCG Express hope everyone to stay safe from COVID-19, and we will get through this crisis together.

SCG Foundation Deploys Over 60 “Pantry of Sharing” Cabinets Nationwide.

SCG Foundation has deployed “Pantry of Sharing” cabinets to lift the community’s spirits. The “Pantry of Sharing” initiative is a concept to bridge the connection between “givers” who can provide support and “receivers” who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The initiative aims to boost spirits in the society. SCG Foundation has placed pantry cabinets in many community spots where people can fill up daily-life necessities for people financially affected by COVID-19 who are urged to take what they need adequately. The initiative is being set up in the hope of encouraging the receiver to one day become the next giver as well as promoting the value of sharing in society.

The “Pantry of Sharing” cabinets are filled with food and necessities such as rice, canned fish, instant noodles, drinking water, milk, tissue paper, sanitary napkin, soap, detergent, etc. The safety of givers and receivers is factored in when it comes to finding the right spots for pantry cabinets. As a result, community areas such as markets, police stations, train stations, temples, or schools are made locations for the pantry cabinet which can also be overseen by the police, taxi motorcycle riders, vendor sellers nearby.

When the first “Pantry of Sharing” cabinet was introduced at Taopoon Police Station, neighborhood food sellers quickly came to add necessities, and people started taking items. In the evening on the same day, the number of items in the cabinet slightly decreased as despite people are taking things, but givers still come to add more.

Besides, the Foundation has extended collaboration to add more “Pantry of Sharing” cabinets in Bangkok and vicinities with many groups and networks, i.e., Office of the Council of State, Four Regions Slum Network, Thai PBS media network, 7HD Channel, as well as fanning out in the provinces through network of Young  Social Developers, Dealers and Volunteer Employees. To date, over 60 pantry cabinets under the initiative have been set up nationwide.
